Prof Verma assumed charge as Additional Director (Research & Training), National Judicial Academy on 30 March 2017.

Having earned an MA degree in History, Prof D P Verma pursued LLB Course of study and secured First Division from Patna University. He did his LLM summa cum laude from Dalhousie University (Canada). He feels extremely honoured to have studied under the supervision of Prof R St J Macdonald, former Dean of Dalhousie Law School, who was later appointed as a Judge in the European Court on Human Rights. Public International Law, Jurisprudence and Human Rights Law have been his area of interest and research during his long career of almost 40 years in the field of legal education.

He entered into teaching profession as Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Allahabad in 1977 and later joined the Law School, Banaras Hindu University in 1979. He was elevated to the position of Professor of Law in 1997. He has to his credit the experience of 20 years as Professor of Law in BHU, a Central University of national importance.

Prof Verma gained administrative experience as Head of the Department of Law, and as Dean of the Faculty of Law in BHU from 2009 to 2012, and also worked with University authorities in different capacities as Coordinator of Legal Cell, Intellectual Property Rights Cell and Chairman of BHU Non-Teaching Employees Grievances Cell. Further, he recalls his days in the University as Administrative Warden of Dr Bhagwan Das Hostel and as an elected Vice-President of BHU Teacher's Association. He has professional affiliation as Life Member of the Indian Society of International Law, and the Indian Law Institute. He has been the Founder Director of Academique, an interdisciplinary discussion group of students, teachers and scholars - a popular intellectual group which functioned effectively in the University campus from 2000 to 2015.

He was selected as one from India among 32 jurists from all over the world and thus participated in the research work in the 1986 session of the Hague Academy of International Law, at the Hague, (the Netherlands), where he worked under the supervision of Prof Frits Kalshoven of Leiden University. Prof Verma attended the 27th Study Session of the International Institute of Human Rights, at Strasbourg in (France) in 1996. He developed interest in international humanitarian law during a Reorientation Programme in close association with Dr Hans Peter Gasser of the International Committee of the Red Cross, at Geneva (Switzerland) in 1987. He was also nominated by the University Grants Commission, the Government of India under the Indo-USSR Cultural Exchange Programme and delivered lecture on "International Economic Law" in the Institute of State and Law at Moscow (USSR).

Prof D P Verma records his past experience as Individual Member of the American Society of International Law (USA), and that of FIAN International (Germany); Member of the Indian Society for Military Law and Law of War (Belgium); and Associate Member of International Institute of Humanitarian Law (Italy), and that of Amnesty International (United Kingdom). He has widely travelled in connection with study, research and participation in international Conferences and seminars abroad. He has visited Canada, France, Japan, Nepal, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and the USSR.

Prof. Verma has been honoured with the title of "Manavadhikar Parasmani" by the Human Rights and Anti-Narcoties Investigation Bureau, and "Vidwat Samman" by Akhil Bhartiya Vidwat Parishad.

He has guided 7 PhD thesis and 37 LLM dissertations. He has contributed a number of research articles in legal periodicals in India and abroad, as well as keynote addresses on various themes in national seminars in different universities in India.

Prof D P Verma has served as President of Rotary Club Varanasi Sunrise of Rotary District 0312 of Rotary International during 2007-2008. He has demitted the office on 28 May 2020.
